Toby’s April News & Views

Gill Arnold, 02 Apr 2012

Hello,

I hope everyone's been making the most of the sunshine, though I'm sure you've all been busy working! I've put together a mix of news over the past week, mostly to do with launching new products. Enjoy.

Zeebox to integrate into TV devices – http://bit.ly/HmA5ex

If you've used Zeebox before, you'll know it's a great way to keep up with opinions surrounding the TV content that you're watching. It also allows anyone with a slightly narcissistic side to have their opinion heard by the millions engaging with the content. In my opinion, I like having two separate screens; one for TV and one for Zeebox and I will probably keep it this way. Do you think this will benefit or hinder your TV experience?

Friends Reunited relaunches – http://bit.ly/HbSnfJ

Friends reunited launched last week as an 'unashamedly nostalgic' site that focuses on peoples memories of famous events. The reason for this decision is that many sites focus on the 'here and now' rather than the past. There have been really mixed opinions on this re-launch, and I'm not sure where I sit on this. I'm sure for some it is enjoyable to discuss and be nostalgic with others online – question is, are there enough of these people?

Does the impact of design need to be measured? – http://bit.ly/GFgsei

A design council forum last week saw a majority crowd vote in favour of the statement 'better evidence of the impact of design will drive up demand' and this article presents four arguments against this statement. The Einstein quote for me summarises the disagreement perfectly: "Not everything that can be counted counts, and not everything that counts can be counted". Isn't the subjectivity of design what makes it individual? Imagine a set of 'global guidelines' that everyone should follow to impact through design. How silly.

Metro begins Tablet Push in London – http://bit.ly/GR4wFp

Metro, the free newspaper, launched a campaign to promote its tablet edition in London last week. The reason for the campaign is due to the free Wi-Fi that will launch on trains and the Underground in London this year. Can't fault this idea, providing it saves paper.
