 Toby's Creative News and Views

Hello,
Last week saw the annual return of the D&AD New Blood festival that took over Spitalfields market. There were exhibitions from the UK's most promising design graduates, as well as talks and workshops from London's most exciting digital companies.
Meera and I were on hand from Futureheads, talking to graduates about how to prepare for a career in digital design. Here you can see the online exhibition of the weeks best work: http://www.dandad.org/talent/new-blood/exhibition.

Now, onto the news....

BIMA and Communicate magazine run morning HTML5 Seminar: http://www.digitalartsonline.co.uk/news/ //
Earlier in the week I attended a brilliant event on why more people are choosing to use HTML5. With speakers from FT labs, The Group, and Centrica. A core focus was on why HTML5 web apps are sometimes a more logical choice than native applications. Clients seem to have gotten over the 'we need an app' culture and are taking advice from design consultancies on what they really need, based on their content, context, and demographic.
Watch this space for a more in-depth review of the event.

Mergers and Acquisitions in digital: http://tinyurl.com/8ycczml  With the spotlight on WPP's recent acquisition of AKQA, it certainly seems an acquisition done in the right way. With Ajaz Ahmed and Tom Bedecarrè still leading the company independently within the WPP group, it seems that their focus won't change too much (if at all). If you were AKQA would you have sold? Or stayed purely independent?

Former Dragon criticises "tech city" focus in East London: http://tinyurl.com/7s5queg //Doug Richard; former Dragons den investor has claimed London's obsession with "tech city" has neglected the creative sector. Whilst I think there should always be a balance, there is still (and always will be) some amazing creative work in London. Also, you could argue that a lot of boundary pushing creative work is possible because of new technology!
